Cheerleader charged in actress slaying

Times Ledger - News - 02/10/2005 - Cheerleader charged in actress slaying

An 18 year old South Jamaica Cheerleader, Ashley Evans, has been charged in the murder of actress Nicole duFresne in Manhattan on Jan 27.

duFresne and some friends were coming out of a bar when the cheerleader, her fiancee and some others demanded money from the group and shot Nicole when she asked "what are you going to do, shoot us?"

The answer was yes and Evan's fiancee, a 19 year old Rudy Fleming of Staten Island shot and killed the up and coming actress right there on the street. The gun was then given to the cheerleader, after she rifled through the purse of the dead actress, so she stashed it away at a relatives home in NY.

Evan's mother hopes everyone understands her daughter is under great peer pressure like other kids and her and the fathers recent divorce upset the girl so much.

While I feel for this kid, I can't understand how her and some friends could think this was a fun thing to do on a Saturday night.

If we didn't coddle our athletes and put them on pedestals and tell them they are above everyone else, perhaps we wouldn't see so many horrible crimes attributed to such a small segment of our society.

Former soccer coach acquitted on charges he raped daughter's friend

Daily Freeman - News - 02/08/2005 - Former soccer coach acquitted on charges he raped daughter's friend

Since I'm always lustrating the sex fiend coaches when they are charged, I should also mention when they are acquitted and possibly framed. But this story still has some Jock elements to it, although the bad, "we can do what we want", attitude seems to be on the part of the cops.

Robert Thorpe, a former girls soccer coach, was accused of raping his daughter's friend between 1999 and 2002 while the girl was 9-13. The girl claimed he would rape her when he came to visit on weekends after moving to Long Island.

Thorpe said all along he was innocent and now he has been vindicated by a jury of his peers to prove it.

Here's the kicker: The cops lied and told him they had DNA evidence when they didn't have any evidence at all, in a feeble attempt to get a confession out of him.

Then they let it go all the way to trial and it only took the jury four hours to acquit Thorpe on all charges because there was absolutely nothing other than the girl's word to prove anything. The girl's parents even testified the rapes would have been impossible without their hearing it in their home.

Cops and Jocks are a lot alike in this respect: They both think it's ok to lie as long as you mean well and get what you want. It's even legal for the police to lie to people while interrogating them.

That's when things like this, or worse, happen.

School band director is suspended for acting like a Jock

ABC12.com: School band director is suspended

This story shows Jock attitudes may not be limited to the players, but even the band that marches during halftime may be overly aggressive in how they punish their members for wrong doing.

It seems a freshman drummer for the Saginaw High School marching band was late for practice one day when he forgot his drumsticks at home. So a senior band member forced him to hold his drum over his head and do so many push ups, the boy's mother claims it broke his elbow.

The district fired the band leader in response and now the students are upset and want to see proof. It seems there has been no evidence presented to the public and no one is even sure if this boy really broke his arm.

If it's true, it's another horrible example of how punishment goes wrong very often in athletic related activities. If it's not, someone owes that band leader a big apology.

Wrestlers Hog-tie, Gag and Shock Fellow Student

The Daytona Beach News-Journal reports on their most recent hazing incident.

A Deltona High School Wrester was captured by five others, hogtied, gagged with tape and then shocked over 20 times with an electric gas grill lighter before a recent match.

The students responsible have all been charged with false imprisonment and aggravated battery or being a principal to aggravated battery and face school punishment as well.

The victim is not hurt, but Deputy Superintendent Tim Huth said "I have a strong belief . . . that not only student athletes' skills but their characters should be developed." and vows to not allow this type of behavior in the future.

These boys will be the first to fall under the school districts new hazing policy and it doesn't look like anyone is going to be lenient with these guys. Even the Florida legislature thinks hazing has gotten out of hand and is said to be ready to introduce legislation making it a felony.

Finally, someone who realizes that when jocks act more like terrorists, they should be treated as such.

At halftime, bring back the marching bands | csmonitor.com

At halftime, bring back the marching bands | csmonitor.com

Susan DeBow has a point. What ever happened to the marching bands at football games? Now we get super spectacles including wardrobe malfunctions and gyrating teenagers. But where did the big music go?

As she says,

" I would get a thrill seeing the band march onto the field like a well-trained army. Disciplined. Into their game. Proud. I wished I could play an instrument as well as they could. As a former baton twirler, I would drop everything to watch a fellow majorette. I was wowed when they would twirl two and three batons, throwing them skyward, I held my breath until they caught them."

Me too, Susan. I've worked in music, particularly rock and roll, for over 25 years and I'm all for the cool shows. But I think we gave pop music it's chance and we got ripped off.

Flashing breasts, young hot girls who can't sing and get booed off stage, and all the gyrating just doesn't compete with the hundreds of talented musicians who used to amaze us with their precision marching and amazing spectacle covering the whole field.

I agree with Susan:

"It's sad that these musicians, who sit in the rain, march in the snow, and play with fingers frozen to their trumpets - who have a vested interest in their teams - are not given their due. Instead, in the moment of glory, they are replaced by lackluster wannabes, faking their singing, screeching at the top of their lungs, and exposing the worst side of themselves."

Let's bring back the game and the team spirit and let the professional performers stick to their concert tours instead of football halftime shows. Does anyone really go to the Superbowl to see Miss Jackson anyway?

HS Cheerleaders Get Drunk and One is her own Lawyer!

TownOnline.com - Danvers Herald - Local News

Before a big game back on Nov 30, the co-captains of the Danvers High School cheerleading squad decided to get drunk and they got caught.

Charged with disorderly conduct, one girl opted for a drug treatment program and the other decided to act as her own attorney.

It seems she did a good job too and only got a years probation with random drug and alcohol testing, despite her already being on probation for driving under the influence.

What do the girls think they should have done? The police report says our young attorney/cheerleader told the cops the girls should have just taken the drug Oxycontin instead since "No one does anything about it" and alcohol causes too much of a problem with adults.

The girls mother says everyone should be lenient because her daughter is a good student with an excellent record and a high SAT score. After all she hopes to go to college and is eligible for a scholarship.

It just seems she has a problem with the drinking and drugs, that's all. Maybe she will finally overcome it at all the Jock Frat parties she will go to in college.
